Epping Town is situated in the south west of Essex
about 18 miles north east of London. The town is separated from the outer
suburbs of London by Epping forest. The early History of Epping is recorded in
the Doomsday book of 1086 giving brief details of a small community living on
the edge of the forest. The name Epping is believed to be from the
Anglo-Saxon "ep" meaning up and "ing" meaning cultivated lands as Epping
is situated 300 feet above sea level.
A number of timber timber framed buildings still
survive from the 17th century in the High St. The oldest surving timber
building is the Black Lion public house. Epping High Street has been designated
as a Conservation area having over thirty grade II or grade III listed
buildings.
